Phones at School: Ban Them or Set Boundaries?

15 Jul 2026

Should students be allowed to bring smartphones to school? It is a question that continues to spark discussions among parents and educators. While some believe that phones should be completely prohibited to maintain students’ focus, others recognize the importance of technology in today’s learning environment. At IPEKA Christian School, we believe the answer lies not in eliminating technology, but in teaching students how to use it responsibly.

For many parents, concerns about smartphone use at school are understandable. Constant notifications, social media, and digital entertainment can easily divide students’ attention, making it difficult for them to concentrate during lessons. Excessive phone use may also reduce opportunities for meaningful face-to-face interactions and expose students to inappropriate content or other digital risks.

However, technology itself is not the problem. When used appropriately, digital tools can enrich the learning experience. Students can access information more efficiently, explore educational resources, and participate in interactive learning activities. Technology can also help develop essential digital literacy skills, preparing students to navigate an increasingly connected world.

As a Christian school, IPEKA recognizes that education involves more than academic achievement. It also means nurturing self-discipline, responsibility, integrity, and wisdom in everyday decisions. These values are especially important when guiding students to develop healthy relationships with technology.

To create a balanced learning environment, IPEKA implements clear guidelines regarding smartphone use during school hours. Students are required to submit their phones after morning devotion, and the devices are returned at dismissal. Smartphones may only be used with teachers’ permission for specific educational purposes or approved activities. Outside these circumstances, phone use is not permitted during school hours.

These boundaries are designed not simply to restrict students, but to help them develop responsible habits. By learning when to put their phones away, students practice self-control, become more present in classroom discussions, and build stronger connections with teachers and friends.

Parents also play an essential role in reinforcing these habits at home. Consistent expectations, open conversations about digital behavior, and positive examples from adults can help children understand that technology is a tool to support their growth rather than something that should control their attention.

Ultimately, the goal is not to raise children who avoid technology, but to nurture individuals who know how to use it wisely. At IPEKA, we believe that the right boundaries today can build responsible digital habits for tomorrow, allowing students to stay focused on learning while developing the character and wisdom needed for their future.
